We are members of GirlGuiding New Zealand and are a district within the Wellington Region.
We currently have one Ranger unit for secondary school aged girls, two Guide units for girls aged 10-14 years, three Brownie units for girls aged 7-10 years and two Pippin units for girls aged 5-7.
Every unit has trained volunteer leaders, some are mothers of girls within the units, and who work along with the girls to plan and provide balanced, fun programmes, once a week, throughout the school term. Meetings vary in length from 1 hour to 2 hours depending on the age of girls in the unit. Many opportunities exist for parents to be involved with the programme in their daughters' unit.
Girls of any ethnicity and/or ability are welcome.
PIPPINS
Pippins meet once a week for an hour and do a variety of activities; indoor, outdoor, games, craft & cooking. They are encouraged to become aware of the community around them. Pippins have a small number of badges and patches they can work on, like the Caterpillar Patch and the WAGGGS Water Badge.
BROWNIES
Brownies meet once a week too, but usually for an hour and a half. They also do a variety of activities. The Brownie programme is more structured and has different levels for girls to progress through. Girls are encouraged to take leadership opportunities and to make choices about what they want in the programme. There is an element of teamwork within the sixes (subgroups within each unit which are led by girls). There are a number of badges and patches to gain, some of these can be completed independently and others as a unit. There are also Theme programmes which have a variety of activities to choose from based around a theme such as BIG, SPARKLE, HOLES, WIND.
GUIDES
Guides also meet once a week, but for about two hours. The Guide programme is structured similarly to the Brownie programme with different levels for girls to progress through. Girls are encouraged to take more leadership opportunities and to make choices about what they want in the programme. The same element of teamwork is in the unit too within the patrols (subgroups within each unit which are led by girls). There are a number of badges and patches to gain, some of these can be completed independently and others as a unit. As with the Brownie programme there are also Theme programmes which have a variety of activities to choose from based around a theme such as EYES, OVER THERE, MYSTERY, NIGHT WATCH.
RANGERS
Girls progress to Rangers between 12 1/2 and 14 1/2 years, as they begin secondary school. We reopened our Ranger unit in mid 2005 after a number of years in recess. The Ranger programme is very girl driven and no two girls will follow the same path to achieve their Queen's Guide Award. Leaders at Rangers are mentors guiding the girls along the way to achieving their goals. Girls in Onslow District continue to have the option to link to units in neighbouring districts.
It is our centenary year so keep checking back here to find out more.
